Beyond Tools and Agents: The Ontological Paradox of Artificial Intelligence in Musical Composition

Activity: Talk or presentation typesInvited talk

    Description

I examine the role of AI systems in supporting the compositional process, exploring the unresolved tension between AI as tool and AI as autonomous creative agent. Drawing on post-Heideggerian philosophical frameworks, I investigate the ontological implications of non-human agency in music generation, particularly how AI systems challenge notions of intentionality. I seek to demonstrate a central paradox: generative AI represents simultaneously the culmination of market-driven instrumentalisation of creative work while being a form of unintelligible alterity that operates beyond human conceptual frameworks.
