Description
Escape rooms on the learning disability nursing degree are established and are becoming a main feature in teaching nursing at Birmingham City University (BCU). BCU academics in learning disability nursing presented their work last year at Escape Rooms in Education Showcase 2025 on the use of digital escape rooms within nursing academia. As well as presenting, the authors were in attendance across the 2 day event and have been inspired by the work presented ever since. The authors have taken the opportunity to disseminate the learning from last year’s conference in particular the breaking in rather than escaping concept which we loved and took inspiration from to apply to the care of people with a learning disability. Numerous reports have highlighted lack of access to services contributing to avoidable and premature deaths. In addition, there is currently a push to increase and promote the field of learning disability nursing nationwide due to a decrease in numbers of registered nurses in this field. Promotion of this nursing field also includes empowering students and professionals in other fields of nursing to support individuals with a learning disability.
The authors have been presented with an opportunity to showcase our escape room at BCU’s Learning and Teaching Innovation Festival 2026. The audience for this work will include external practice partners across a range of disciplines from the Midlands region.
For this escape room conference, the authors as BCU academics are enthused to highlight and showcase the development of a new escape room where we have applied principles learnt from our attendance at last year’s escape room conference. This session focusses on supporting a service user with a learning disability to get ready to take to hospital and is designed to be an innovative learning experience to support nursing students in all fields of nursing (learning disabilities, adult, child and mental health). The authors propose a live digital delivery in the form of a live play testing session for this version and will be using feedback from this session to develop our practice further and share learning with practice partners.
