Description

•Accountable that the Department’s goals and outcomes for research (outputs, funding, PhDs and impact) are well above those required for successful REF returns
•Line management of staff (note that the allocation of staff to manage is carried out by the Head of Department in consultation with the Dean of School, and may be unrelated to the nature of the responsibility).
•Lead, coordinate and develop the Department’s approach to research including: research activity and income generation; promoting high quality outputs at discipline-appropriate volume; driving income generation to agreed levels; achieving research impact; managing research budgets; enabling impact and environment.
•Responsible for research governance and integrity, oversight of project compliance, quality reviews, ensuring the management of committee functions and reporting and audit functions.
•Provide Department oversight of ethics and PGR support within the Department; contributing to workforce planning and recruitment (including Sig Res); ensuring that research and innovation is embedded in learning and teaching and other enterprise/business activity (e.g., student enterprise).
•Develop the Department research culture and environment (including capacity building, development and mentoring of academic staff, development and enhancement of research and innovation groups and encouraging cross-university and cross-School multi-disciplinary working, especially in the context of STEAM, and investment of QR funding).
•Work closely with Academic Leads across the Department and other Academic Leads for Research within the School and across the university, including the Research Thematic leads.
•Approve departmental research workload allocations, working with the Head of Department to ensure that the priorities of the department are fully met.
