Description
Escape rooms on the learning disability nursing degree are established and are becoming a main feature in teaching nursing at Birmingham City University (BCU). BCU academics in learning disability nursing presented their work last year at Escape Rooms in Education Showcase 2025 on the use of digital escape rooms within nursing academia. As well as presenting, the authors were in attendance across the 2 day event and have been inspired by the work presented ever since. The authors have taken the opportunity to disseminate the learning from last year’s event, highlight our work, reflections and good practice to create an escape room community of practice for nurses and allied health professionals. In addition, there is currently a push to increase and promote the field of learning disability nursing nationwide due to a decrease in numbers of registered nurses in this field. Promotion of this nursing field also includes empowering students and professionals in other fields of nursing to support individuals with a learning disability. This is a key priority at BCU and we are developing different escape rooms as a way to improve formative assessments as part of a new curriculum.
This lightning talk shared how the authors were inspired following last year’s conference and the journey since then in enhancing our practice and future plans including outreach, publication, practice enhancement and future development proposals.
