Description
Receiving a diagnosis of Developmental Language Disorder (DLD) is a significant moment for families and can shape how children are understood and supported at home and in school. Although speech and language therapists play a central role in identifying DLD, many parents report that the diagnostic process is unclear or emotionally challenging. Previous research suggests that professionals may avoid diagnostic terminology, yet parents consistently report that having a clear diagnosis supports understanding, advocacy, and access to support. This invited talk presents findings from a co-produced research project led by a steering group of parents of children with DLD working alongside speech and language therapists and a health researcher. Semi-structured interviews with parents explored experiences of receiving a DLD diagnosis and perceptions of what constitutes a good diagnostic experience. Findings were developed collaboratively through a shared workshop, where parents reflected on common themes and identified priorities for practice.
Parents described extended periods of uncertainty before diagnosis, strong emotional responses when the diagnosis was delivered, and ongoing challenges in securing appropriate educational support. Across these experiences, parents consistently emphasised the importance of receiving a clear explanation of DLD and experiencing empathy during the diagnostic conversation. Parents also highlighted the value of sharing experiences with others, which supported reflection and validation of their own journeys.
By combining research findings with parent perspectives presented in their own voices, this session aims to support teachers and parents in understanding the impact of diagnosis and the role of communication and empathy in shaping family experiences. The talk will highlight how co-production with parents can inform more responsive and supportive practice for children with DLD.
