Description
I had the privilege of being supported by Dr Helen McIntyre throughout my studies on the MSci Midwifery with Leadership programme at The University of Leicester from September 2020 to August 2023. Helen served as both my personal tutor and programme lead, and I can confidently say that her guidance and support were pivotal in my ability to complete the course and ultimately qualify as a midwife. I was also won the cohort highest mark award which was a lovely surprise!During my time on the programme, Helen was an invaluable source of support and guidance, not only academically, but also in the personal and emotional support she provided during a particularly challenging period in my life. When I faced difficult family circumstances that put my continued studies at risk, Helen’s response was nothing short of exceptional. Helen’s empathetic approach and flexible response to my situation allowed me to stay on track and continue my studies. Helen made a concerted effort to accommodate my needs, enabling me to persevere despite my personal challenges. Without Helen’s understanding and support, it is unlikely I would have been able to complete the programme and reach my goal of becoming a midwife.
One of the defining aspects of Helen's leadership was her unwavering commitment to equity and inclusion. Helen’s commitment to supporting students extends far beyond academic guidance. Helen embodied the principles of citizenship in her approach to teaching, consistently ensuring that all students, regardless of background and personal circumstances, were given the tools and support they needed to maximise their potential and succeed.
Under Helen’s guidance, I gained not only the clinical and leadership skills to become a midwife but also a strong sense of responsibility to the communities I serve. Helen’s approach, combining compassion, flexibility, and high standards continues to inspire my practice as a midwife. I strive to create an environment where the families I work with feel supported, respected, and empowered, just as Helen made me feel throughout my studies.
In conclusion, Dr. Helen McIntyre’s support was essential in helping me complete the MSci Midwifery with Leadership programme and in becoming a qualified midwife. Helen’s understanding, flexibility, and dedication to student success made a huge difference to my experience and I am deeply grateful for the role she played in my academic journey.

To Whom this may concern:
I had the pleasure of being taught by Helen McIntyre between 2018 – 2023 whilst studying for a MSCi in Midwifery with leadership at the University of Leicester. I qualified as a Midwife in 2023 and now work at the George Eliot Hospital in Nuneaton as a rotational band 6 midwife.
Helen supported me greatly during the process of obtaining my degree not only academically but also to overcome many personal challenges during the course of the 4 year degree. As my personal tutor she played an integral role in helping me to seek a diagnosis of dyslexia, which enabled me to gain extra support throughout my degree, without which I feel that I may have struggled to complete my studies. Helen was compassionate, caring and understanding of individualised needs, she helped me to not only achieve a fantastic grade in my studies, but to thrive as a mature student and to grow into the midwife that I am today.
"Its so hard to put into words what Helen means to me"
Kind Regards
Michelle Sutton.
