    Description

A level 5 ‘Global health and management of change midwifery’ module incorporating 100%, self -funded and organised home/away elective placements, assessment as poster presentation and evaluations is explored. NHS Trust and HEI organisational cultures impact midwifery practice (Kirkup Report, 2015) and student midwife development. Mentorship and practice opportunities vary across the UK and globally but the positive impact of midwives on maternal and child health is unequivocal (WHO, 2015). Birmingham, the UK’s second city, has wide multicultural diversity which is reflected in this innovative midwifery module (BCU, 2014).
This 15 credit module has lead lectures, external speakers and group work. The assessment compares two countries, relevant MDG/SDG, one maternal/child outcome, change management strategy and health promotional model for implementation. Excellent EE feedback has been gained.
    Elective placement findings:
    • Opened my eyes to negligent practice
    • Documentation!!
    • The importance of referral pathways in creating individualised care
    • To above all show kindness, even in emergencies. Women should be put first and treated like women not vessels that we can do anything to
    • It has made me appreciate the NHS a lot more …..importance of communicating with the women, as the language barrier was a huge problem during the elective placement.
    • Increased confidence to transfer midwifery skills
    • The importance of continuity of care …empowering …encouraging women to have the kind of birth they want and hope for.
The maturity and development demonstrated by the students are in excess of that any formalised education or staying in the same organisation could have provided.
