Exchange rate very critical under IMF

Press/Media

Description

This article examines the importance of exchange-rate management for Pakistan under an IMF-supported programme. It analyses how rupee volatility affects inflation, business costs, trade and the balance of payments, while questioning the sustainability of short-term external borrowing and both rigidly fixed and fully market-determined exchange-rate approaches. The article calls for a context-sensitive monetary strategy, stronger State Bank intervention and deeper domestic capital markets to promote currency and macroeconomic stability.
