Contribution to The I Paper story on the College of Policing's Barred List:
"The force also proactively sends misconduct outcomes to the media via press releases.
Nawaz Hanif, a former Professional Standards Branch (PSB) investigator at West Midlands Police and now a lecturer in criminology at Birmingham City University, told i there needs to be greater transparency around police misconduct cases.
“In the environment we’re in now, when public trust and confidence in policing is at an all-time low, there’s a need to change the rules,” he said.
“We need forces to address the outcomes [of misconduct cases] in a way that is much more transparent and clear and easily accessible.
“The same goes for the College of Policing and the barred list – it’s not publicly accessible as you would expect a list to be.”
The CoP report also reveals that a further 51 former officers have been given lifelong “exemption” from being placed on the barred list since it was launched in 2017.
Officers can be granted this exception if they can successfully argue it is in the interests of national security, may jeapordise future criminal proceedings, or would cause “significant” harm to any person."
