Advancing Context-Specific Damage Assessment Methodologies and Damage Classification Standards

    Impact: Societal impacts

    Description of impact

As co-chair of the Global Shelter Cluster’s Damage Assessment Sub-Community of Practice, I played a key role in organising and delivering the webinar titled *Advancing Context-Specific Damage Assessment Methodologies and Damage Classification Standards*. This session brought together international practitioners, researchers, and field experts to examine current challenges and emerging practices in post-disaster and post-conflict damage assessment across multiple global contexts.

My involvement in shaping the agenda ensured that the webinar directly addressed priority themes identified through our recent sector-wide survey. In collaboration with colleagues, I facilitated the design of a programme that highlighted diverse experiences from Fiji, Ethiopia, Myanmar, and other regions, enabling participants to engage with practical case studies spanning earthquakes, floods, cyclones, and conflict-related damage. The event created a structured space for knowledge exchange, methodological reflection, and technical alignment across agencies.

By participating in and co-leading this initiative, I contributed to strengthening global collaboration on damage assessment standards and enhancing the sector’s collective capacity to improve the accuracy, equity, and contextual relevance of housing recovery interventions. The insights shared during the webinar will inform future guidance, support more harmonised data practices, and ultimately help improve decision-making processes that affect crisis-affected communities.

This activity directly supports my ongoing research and professional work in shelter, post-conflict housing, and equitable recovery, and further reinforces my leadership role within the Global Shelter Cluster technical community.
