Description of impact
Cine-Excess is an international Film Festival and Conference that has been hosted by BCU since 2016.The festival was launched in 2007 to harness and develop wider cultural and critical interests in cult cinema traditions that had emerged at that time. The festival brings together international filmmakers with cinema scholars and industry representatives for an event that combines international filmmaker awards, UK theatrical film premieres, a themed academic conference and student mentoring sessions. Cine-Excess has an established national media profile and regularly attracts international guests, who also mentor film students within BCU.
Alongside these annual events, additional derivatives to the Cine-Excess festival have included: a UK wide DVD label pairing feature film releases with teaching tool extras created by academics (3 releases created between 2008-2011), a peer reviewed Cine-Excess e-journal (6 issues created between 2013-present) whose outputs featured in REF2014/2021, and a documentary production arm whose practice-based outputs were submitted to REF2014/2021 and also premiered at leading international film festivals before being released on UK wide DVD/Blu-ray releases (2 x REF 2014 submissions, 3 x REF 2020 submissions).
The festival’s external media profile has been complimented by a network of regional, national and international industry partnerships that have resulted in a range of corporate and B2B collaborations. The festival’s industry imprint has been further confirmed by the international filmmakers who regularly attended Cine-Excess. They have included: Pam Grier (Jackie Brown), Joe Dante (Gremlins), Catherine Breillat (Romance), Jen and Sylvia Soska (Rabid 2019), Brandon Cronenberg (Infinity Pool), Roger Corman (The Mask of the Red Death), Ti West (X/Pearl), John Landis (An American Werewolf in London), Dario Argento (Suspiria), Franco Nero (Django), Vanessa Redgrave (Blow Up), Ruggero Deodato (Cannibal Holocaust) and Stuart Gordon (Re-Animator).
The event is currently ongoing, however 2027 marks the 20th anniversary of Cine-Excess and therefore an appropriate point to reflect on changes (both inside and beyond the academy) that the event has inspired in wider critical and cultural understandings of cult cinema.
