Digital Twin for Healthy Homes Research Programme

Impact: Quality of Life

Description of impact

This research programme generates impact across health, housing policy, and industry practice. By developing and deploying Digital Twin systems that proactively manage indoor air quality for respiratory-vulnerable populations, the work directly contributes to reducing health inequalities in social housing.

The most immediate pathway to impact is through Awaab's Law compliance. Following the death of two-year-old Awaab Ishak from prolonged mould exposure in social housing, the UK Government introduced legal requirements for housing providers to address damp and mould hazards within prescribed timeframes. This research provides housing associations such as WHG with an evidence-based, technology-enabled framework for proactive mould risk prediction and environmental intervention, shifting from reactive complaint handling to preventive management.

The One Eastside deployment demonstrates scalability to high-rise residential developments, offering a replicable model for the UK property sector. Collaboration with NHS providers creates pathways for integrating environmental monitoring with clinical respiratory care. Industry partnerships with Cisco and Court Collaboration are translating research outputs into commercially viable products and services, with potential to influence building management practice across the social and private housing sectors nationally.
