Description of impact
I was invited by the Ethical Support Alliance to chair a session at the National Liberal Club, in London. It was a conference on war crimes, international justice and documenting war casualties. The conference welcomed delegates from the Lviv State University of Internal Affairs, Policing and Legal Studies students, as part of a 2026 Ukrainian Exchange Programme to the UK. It was followed by a visit to the House of Commons. The Ukrainian delegates presented evidence on the ongoing war crimes and crimes against humanity committed by Russia in Ukraine, including torture and the abduction of children. They spoke bravely and with emotion. As Chair, I started and concluded the meeting by talking about the challenges of casualty recording during armed conflict, and its importance for the protection and promotion of human rights. As a casualty recorder of over 20 years, I talked about my practice and read from my book 'Human Costs of War. 21st Century Human (In)Security from 2003 Iraq to 2022 Ukraine'. I led discussions on ways Britain should be responding to the Russia-Ukraine war, in terms of military training, policy, aid and further engagement. Discussions and debates around European security followed the presentations by the Ukrainian delegates. MPs present pledged support.
Invited guests included Rosemary Thomas MBE (Chair Liberal Democrat Friends of Ukraine Group), Steve Osbiston (Vice-chair Liberal Democrat Friends of Ukraine Group) Noel Hadjimichael FRSA (Defence Circle, National Liberal Club), Alina Luts (Convenor, Richmond Ukrainian Society, Adrain Aderyn (Sqdn. Ldr. R.A.F, Retd.), Anna Zagrebelna (Ukraine Policy Network) and Andriy Marchenko (Ukrainian Centre for Cultural Affairs).
The session at the House of Commons that followed was hosted by Rt. Hon. Olly Glover MP.
