Rapid evidence reviews for the UKRI Research Programme on Gambling

Description of impact

Rapid Evidence Reviews (RER) are a streamlined approach to reviewing existing research evidence in this context of gambling harms.

RER will support a step change in the high quality, independent research available on gambling harms and will help identify evidence gaps within the research and innovation ecosystem relating to gambling harms.

The RER will form an integral part of the early stages of UKRI’s Research Programme on Gambling.

The recent introduction of crypto-gambling companies has received little academic investigation. While gambling marketing and sports sponsorship are
well studied, cryptocurrency and blockchain marketing, including crypto-gambling, remains largely unexamined.

The purpose of the research is to examine the use of sports partnerships by crypto-gambling companies as a vehicle to reaching a wider audience and
target sports fans.

The project has two elements:

A rapid scoping review of the literature related to this topic.

The creation and development of a database of crypto-gambling sports and activations.

Together, these two work packages provide insight from both academic and real-world perspectives into a nascent and under-researched area, providing evidence to inform policy.
