Research and Innovation interests
Professor of Life Sciences at Birmingham City University, and a renowned global expert in Exercise Science, Health Nutrition, Lifestyle and Public Health with over 30 years experience in a distinguished career in the UK and overseas. I chaired top academic, research, clinical and professional departments, and transformed global public health policies and lifestyle and sports strategies. Led a distinguished career at top UK universities (Birmingham City, Teesside, Sheffield Hallam, Suffolk, Lincoln, Middlesex, Abertay Dundee, Greenwich and Essex), and internationally (Qatar, Kuwait, Taiwan). I am also an Executive of the Asian Nutrition Society of Sport and Health (ANSSH) involving 22 countries and over 3000 members. Previously I was the Head of Epidemiology and Public Health at the prestigious Dasman Diabetes Institute, worked alongside Noble Prize nominee Chief Scientific Officer for two years before joining Taipei University as a full professor in Sport & health nutrition in Taiwan. I since returned to UK to lead Public Health and Preventative Healthcare and Director of Doctorate Program for at Teesside University for 4.5 years before being welcomed as a full professor in Life Sciences at Birmingham City University.
I advised several governments, professional bodies and NGOs in pubic health, epidemiology, sport and nutrition, creating policies and guidelines. As a PI I led numerous funded projects worth over $10 million, and directed successful projects on Diabetes Prevention and Management, Nutraceuticals and Functional Foods, Exercise Training and Management, NCDs, Multimorbidity and Preventative Public Health, Health Equity and Reducing Global Disparity. I also act as independent subject expert of major UK and International Grant Boards (NIHR UK, MRC-UK, NIH Hong King, ANSSH), and I also part of accreditation panels for several international boards (Ireland, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Qatar, Kuwait) and an external examiner for research and teaching in the UK. Scientifically, I act as a Scientific Editor for top high impact journals including Frontiers Physiology, Clinical Diabetes, Public Health, and Nutrients. I published over 100 top quality scientific outputs, 3 best-selling books & sixteen book chapters.
I have a PhD in Sport Science (Physiology and Metabolism), and an MSc (Health and Fitness) from the University of Essex. I am a Fellow of the Royal Society of Medicine (FRSM), Registered Nutritionist (RNutr), Fellow of the UK Higher Education Academy (FHEA), Clinical Physiologist and a Certified international sports nutritionist (CISSN).
