Research and Innovation interests

Dr Alice Storey is an Associate Professor of Human Rights in the Law department and Associate Director of the Centre for Human Rights. She leads the United Nations: Law and Practice undergraduate LLB module. Alice is also BCU Site Director for the Midlands4Cities Doctoral Training Partnership (AHRC).

Alice’s research predominantly focuses on the UN’s Universal Periodic Review (UPR) mechanism, specifically examining how States and civil society engage with international human rights, with a particular emphasis on women's rights and the abolition of capital punishment. Alice is the Academic Lead of the UPR Project at BCU, which was shortlisted for a Times Higher Education Award in 2021. The UPR Project engages in practice with the UPR mechanism, supporting civil society organisations and domestic governments. This allows Alice’s academic research to be translated into practical change for human rights on the ground.

Alice is also co-founder of the ‘UPR Academic Network’, which brings together a large, international network of scholars working on the UPR.

Alice regularly takes part in public engagement activities, including being invited to sit as an expert panellist. For example, in May 2023 and June 2025, she advised the UK parliament’s Joint Select Committee on Human Rights regarding the UK’s UPR. Since 2015, she has been a pro-bono academic for the charity, Amicus, providing expertise on international law and the death penalty.

Alice’s research also engages with access to higher education, particularly for working-class people, and she leads the BCU Working-Class Network for staff and students.
