Personal profile

Research and Innovation interests

I am an artist and Professor in Fine Art Practice at Birmingham City University. I make live, collaborative works that explore how individuals inhabit large social structures of 'public good' including healthcare, education, utilities and work. This artistic research process generates insights into institutions but also seeks to resist their weighty effect, and to reanimate possibilities for shared criticality. Works have been commissioned by organisations including City of Calgary Water Services, Sarah Wigglesworth Architects, and Guys and St Thomas Hospital, and art organisations including Kunstprijs Amstelveen, New Art Gallery Walsall and Grizedale Arts. In addition, many works are part of interdisciplinary research projects. This currently includes working with energy researchers to explore heating transition in Romania, Finland, Sweden and the UK (CHANSE fund, 2022), and with cultures of childhood researchers to explore children's experiences of institutions (AHRC 2018, and AHRC exhibition fund 2023). Both of these projects build on my exploration of time, and the way that the past, present and future are encountered.

Through these interdisciplinarity projects I also examine the difficult, messy and remarkable process of working across disciplines. These collaborations also enable reflection on the occupation of multiple roles- leading other artists, making my own work, and co-forming interdisciplinary communities. Journal and chapter writing is used to reflect on the complexities of working in institutional space and with others. A belief, and joy in the value of working together motivates everything, forged by experience of co-leading Static Gallery in the 2000s.
