Research and Innovation interests
Dr Charlotte Carey is an experienced academic leader she is currently ‘Research, Innovation and Enterprise lead’ at BCU’s College of Business, Digital Transformation and Entrepreneurship. She has a creative background, starting her career as a self-employed audio-visual artist. Her interest in technology led to her co-running a start-up web design and marketing consultancy based in Birmingham’s Custard Factory.
This personal experience led to her research focus: Entrepreneurship within the creative and cultural industries, Entrepreneurship Education and where these two coalesce. Throughout this time she has acquired an in-depth knowledge of the creative and cultural industries sector, a sensitive appreciation of business issues, alongside a deep understanding of the parameters and barriers faced by individuals accessing these industries. Her research approach is characterised as 'applied' and has involved working with partners from local organisations for example currently collaborating with Birmingham Museums Trust to a wide range of partners from the UK, the EU and beyond for example: The BEST project for Social Enterprise Education (EU partners); Creative Metropoles (EU partners) and the AHEAD project (working with a partnership of 11 East African HEIs).
Charlotte has co-organised a number of research conferences related to creative enterprise, small business and entrepreneurship field and as the Co-chair of the Creative Industries track and SIG for ISBE (Institute of small business and entrepreneurship).
