Personal profile

Teaching Interests

Following graduation in 1977 I held several positions in industry as a programmer and systems analyst specializing in applying Mathematical, Statistical and Operational Research techniques to business applications and problems.

In 1985 I returned to full time education taking an MSc in Robotics. I have worked at Birmingham City University and its predecessor organizations since 1987. Initially my role was an IT Adviser giving support to students, academics and other staff on their use of IT both as individuals and strategically at a faculty level. This included a Learning Support and training function helping students with their use of Mathematics, Statistics and IT.

Initially employed by Computer Services (now IT) but based in various departments (principally Engineering then Computing).

From 1994 I was employed directly by the Faculty of Computing becoming a Lecturer in 2000.

Since 2010 I have held my current post in Business School.

Over the years I have taught diverse subjects including Computer Programming, Artificial Intelligence, Auditing, Electrical Science, Quantitative Decision Making as well as Mathematics and Statistics.

In 2003 I completed a part-time MA in Education which included research into problems in teaching mathematics to undergraduates and assessment in the teaching or programming languages.
