Abstract

The martial art of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu combines submission grappling techniques derived from Judo, Sambo and Freestyle Wrestling. Between 2015 and the start of the pandemic in early 2020 BJJ 24-7 experienced substantial growth in its number of competitors and events. BJJ 24/7 held approximately 8 major events annually during its peak success period with each event attracting over 250 competitors. Lawrence aimed to expand BJJ 24-7's reach to regions beyond the UK during his successful business period. The UK government's pandemic restrictions adversely affected BJJ 24-7 events because contact sports participation was banned during this time. BJJ 24-7 events participants experienced both mental and physical health problems resulting from weight gain during competition interruptions (SDG 3: Good Health and Well-being). This study aims to examine the development and expansion of BJJ 24-7 and Lawrence's experiences through both challenges and victories.
