An Assessment of the Impact of Smart Home and Environmentally Beneficial Technologies on the UK 2050 Net-zero Carbon Target

Abstract

This paper investigates how smart home technology could be effectively utilised to
aid the UK government in meeting climate change targets and mitigate the
environmental impact by reducing carbon and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.
Both primary and secondary data were sought to gain insight into the research
problem from; i) specialist professionals of smart home technology implementation
and ii) users of smart home technology. An exploratory questionnaire was
formulated, to capture participants' views and perspectives based on their
experience in this area.
There is an urgency for renewable, low-carbon energy sources to reduce the 5
tonnes annual carbon emissions from a UK household. A multi-faceted approach,
relying on the involvement of the general public and the government is needed as
with advancing energy grids to make them more efficient and reliable, and installing
smart meters within the household to reduce carbon emissions. The paper bridged a
significant gap in the body of knowledge in the area of smart homes.
