    Abstract

This paper, published in the Generations Review (the Journal of the British Society of Gerontology, at that time), outlines how back areas of nursing homes can become sites of abuse and mistreatment. Using ethnographic data, the article demonstrates that the 'lounge standard patient' - i.e. the patient in the state most seen by visitors and inspectors, is often not representative of the work that routinely goes on in 'back stage' areas. It is a call to action around challenging abuse in these hidden spaces.

This publication and data and examples of ethnographic interactions used within it, were dramatised by the BBC Learning Zone, in their televised course for care workers and managers on high quality care.
