Abstract
Biotechnology is a rapidly developing sector both internationally and within the UK. Sector development is complemented by world-class strengths in relevant fundamental research and a growing technology transfer and exploitation capability, largely through universities and other research institutions with a biotechnology focus. Although dominated by the 'golden triangle' of Cambridge, London and Oxford, in other regions the sector is also showing signs of strong growth, based on clusters of start-up and early-stage companies. As a sector that is set to grow rapidly over the next 20 years, the development of top level management with a focus on fund acquisition, investment in growth and continued astute business planning will be the key to success. In turn, this will require not only adequate staff development, but also the need to ensure high profile public awareness in order to encourage the uptake of science at graduate level and thus develop a suitably qualified workforce. This article draws upon the findings of recent research which examined workforce development issues in the biotechnology sector in the South West of England and presents an overview of the essential skills development options that need to be quickly assimilated by sector organisations and the industry in order to realise the full potential of this sector.
