Abstract
In this chapter I look at the new music commissioned for the BBC Proms between 1960 and 1985 through the lens of Political Economy, «the study of the social relations, particularly the power relations, that mutually constitute the production, distribution, and consumption of resources»1, focusing on the financial resources that the BBC provided for this activity. It is the social relationships between individuals within the BBC, and relationships between those at the BBC with composers, publishers and agents that «constitute the […] distribution, and consumption of resources». In each of the examples which follow, I argue that it is the case that when one or more persons becomes involved in an existing process, it is their intervention which provokes a change in the status quo.
