title = "Capturing Craft: Baskervilles Typographic Punches",
abstract = "The AHRC {\textquoteleft}Small Performances{\textquoteright} project provides a rare opportunity to investigate the tools Baskerville used to create his eponymous typeface, his typographic punches. The punches are the only extant evidence of his workshop and it is the punch face (engraved letter end) that often receives the most focus. However the face represents the final accumulative process in a chain of craft processes. Close examination behind the face reveals a rich textured surface of often over-looked witness mark. Marks that evidence the tools used to craft the punches and provide clues to decipher the multiple craft skills in the making of a punch. ",

note = "In July 2024 the {\textquoteleft}Small Performances{\textquoteright} research team gathered for a {\textquoteleft}Capturing Craft{\textquoteright} workshop at the Birmingham School of Jewellery. Punch-making is a complex mix of processes performed though a chain of interdependent crafts people, from blacksmiths forging bar to fine detailed engraving their combined knowledge rarely left their workshops. The aim of the workshop to physically experience the metal transformations needed to make the punches, and to understand the relationship between materials, tools, craft skills and witness marks left on the punches. The Exhibition July 2025 draws on the Capturing Craft workshop findings. The 1st stage of the exhibition (16 panels) was exhibited at the Library of Birmingham 6/3/-22/5/2025. 2nd, LoB panels in conjunction with 10 A0 Punch images large scrolls, and 3 vitrines of craft tools similar to Baskerville's tools, at The Hive Gallery 2/7/-1/8/2025 Birmingham. 3rd, 10 punch scrolls exhibited at Winterbourne House Birmingham, Association of European Printing Museum Conference 3-5/9/2025. Exhibitions in Reading and Cambridge are planned for 2026. ",
