    Abstract

The AHRC ‘Small Performances’ project provides a rare opportunity to investigate the tools Baskerville used to create his eponymous typeface, his typographic punches. The punches are the only extant evidence of his workshop and it is the punch face (engraved letter end) that often receives the most focus. However the face represents the final accumulative process in a chain of craft processes. Close examination behind the face reveals a rich textured surface of often over-looked witness mark. Marks that evidence the tools used to craft the punches and provide clues to decipher the multiple craft skills in the making of a punch.
