    Funding

    Peter J . Larkham began research at the University of Birmingham, first with the Centre for Urban and Regional Studies and then the School of Geography, where he gained his Ph .D . His continuing research on aspects of urban planning, development and conservation has been supported by grants from the Leverhulme Trust and, most recently, by a Postdoctoral Fellowship awarded by the British Academy . He is currently Secretary of the Institute of British Geographers Urban Geography Study Group . Planning-related papers have been published in journals ranging from Transactions of the Institute of British Geographers to Town Planning Review, Local Government Studies and Cities . Relevant book chapters have appeared in J . Vilagrasa (ed .) Historia Urban i Intervencio en el Centre Historic (Institut Cartografic de Catalunya, 1988) and T . R . Slater (ed .) The Built form of Western Cities (Leicester University Press, 1990) .
