Emerging Technologies in Healthcare: Disability-Related Perspectives from Ghana

The benefits of emerging technologies in healthcare cannot be overlooked, but the challenges must also be noted. Access to healthcare is a notable global challenge for many persons with disabilities. Persons with disabilities living in low- and middle-income countries, such as Ghana, could be worse off. There is limited access to healthcare viewed from various dimensions, such as availability, affordability, environmental, information/communication, and equipment accessibility. The association of disability and poverty could add layers to the healthcare vulnerabilities of persons with disabilities. Persons with disabilities in rural Ghana, where poverty is more concentrated, with little or no access to electricity and healthcare facilities, are further disadvantaged. Guided by the theory of intersectionality and the social model of disability, we examine factors that could affect emergent healthcare technology experiences of persons with various forms of disabilities, gender, age, geographic location, and other socio-demographic factors.
