Abstract

Through exploration of Birmingham School of Architecture & Design’s pioneering live project programme, this paper presents a commentary on the potential of architecture and design education in achieving the ambitions of the Civic University movement. We argue that the evolution of these projects represents a shift from working, ‘for’, to working, ‘with’, the city. The paper posits a dialogic two-way exchange to change the way we think about how universities engage with the city, and equally how cities engage with universities.
