    Abstract

Assessment is a key aspect of all forms of education. This interlude discusses the various ways in which assessment impacts upon the teaching and learning of composing in educational settings. It describes the uses and purposes to which assessment is put and outlines important differences between various types of assessment normally encountered, including those of formative and summative assessment. The key role of formative assessment in developing composing is outlined, and questions are raised as to whether assessments are undertaken of process, in other words of composing, or of product, the resulting composition. Issues of rubrics and assessment criteria are discussed, and international terminological distinctions are addressed.
