    Abstract

Music theory occupies a crucial position within the artistic persona of Andr Jolivet, the long-ignored yet highly innovative compatriot and peer of Oliver Messiaen. This book chapter has a two-fold aim: firstly, to collect and synthesise the most important theoretical concepts found across a range of the composer?s writings within his first mature period; secondly, to test such concepts ?in action? through detailed analysis of Jolivet?s Cinq danses rituelles (1939). Through this process are revealed complex music practice-theory relationships, as well as interplay between poietic and esthesic approaches to elucidation of the music, both also having wider application beyond Jolivet studies.
