Abstract
Just Passing Through is a piece written for a combination of Western Classical and Korean Traditional instruments. It was commissioned by Seoul National University for the Seoul National University Contemporary Music Ensemble with pianist Jong Hwa Park. Seoul National University has one of the world’s leading departments in Korean Traditional music performance and this was a collaboration with their students. As part of the collaborative process, in January 2020, I attended three days of workshops and lectures specially arranged for myself (and the other commissioned composer, David Lugwig from Curtis Institute). Due to the global pandemic, the project had to become virtual, but in January 2021 I had a workshop over zoom with the musicians and the piece was then recorded, and a film was made. In February 2021, Royal Birmingham Conservatoire hosted an online symposium with participants from RBC, Seoul National University and Curtis Institute. As part of that event, this piece was presented. It was also broadcast on Resonance FM in May 2021. I plan to use the audio recording for a future CD release ahead of the next REF.
