Abstract

The Know Your Organs workshop was introduced to address the challenges of bioscience education for Nursing learners. Biosciences is a demanding subject for Nursing learners, resulting in a challenge to develop, understand and apply this knowledge both theoretically and clinically (Caon & Treagust 1993; Craft et al. 2013). Furthermore, teaching of anatomy and physiology frequently relies on didactic methods (Tune et al, 2013; Tufts and Higgins-Opitz, 2009), utilising two-dimensional platforms like PowerPoint or YouTube.
The know your organs workshop was jointly designed and delivered by a nurse educator and a physiologist. The aim is to develop learners understanding of anatomical and (patho-)physiological knowledge through a rich tactile learning experience. This approachuses major organs and structures that complement and advances their academic and practice-based learning.
This presentation will explore how utilising a tactile approach to bioscience education impacts learners. We will share feedback from learners and the impact on their confidence with anatomical and (patho-) Physiological concepts. We will also discuss how this workshop has developed and impacted on other professions and our plans for the future of this workshop.
