Abstract
Contracts and artists have a similar recent history: their emergence as dominant visions of human existence and human ways of life have accompanied the ?long enlightenment? in the West, from the late medieval period to our own confusing late-modern times. While recognisably contractual and artistic forms have existed in all recorded human history, they have by no means possessed the conceptual coherence and prominence which they now have.
