Abstract
This chapter investigates factors that motivate migrant participation in diaspora bonds issued to finance climate projects. The empirical study is based on a survey of 1,265 migrants and interview responses from 17 diaspora investors and academic researchers in Europe. The migrant’s connection to the country of origin is positively correlated with participation in the bonds. Diaspora bonds with longer maturity and frequent coupons are attractive to high-income earners. A climate emergency requires investment in mitigation and adaptation projects. Thus, this study highlights factors diaspora considers important when subscribing to diaspora bonds for climate projects. These findings have major academic and policy implications.
