Abstract

This paper explores the politics of the popular in jazz through the work of the pianist and composer Jacques Loussier. As a way in to discussing questions of cultural value in jazz, I will first consider the critical reception of Loussier, arguably the most significant proponent of jazz-Bach intersections, and then open this out to broader comparisons with other Bach projects to consider the ever-changing discourse of jazz and popular music and what we can learn from this today.
