Abstract

This presentation explores the relationship between jazz pianism and the music of JS Bach from different creative, cultural and critical perspectives, and considers particular cultural sensitivities, value systems, and identity frames which can help us understand, or engage more meaningfully with, intersections between jazz and the baroque. Whilst the academic study of jazz and the baroque is by no means new – indeed, the subject has been of interest to scholars since the 1940s. I explore how the relationship between jazz pianists and JS Bach feeds into discourses surrounding the politics of genre, race, gender, and geography, as well as debates about authenticity and popularity in jazz.
