Abstract

ON THE OTHER EARTH
The worlds first 3D 360 post cinematic choreographic film installation.
“Extremely discombobulating and utterly amazing” - Financial Times
“Spectacular” - Art Newspaper
On the Other Earth, is a new post-cinematic performative work, which refracts, evolves and re-imagines narratives within an equally daring contemporary vision. A collaboration with visionary VR and 3D technology and virtual spaces innovator, Jeffrey Shaw’s radical immersive interactive environment, who has developed the unique nVis screen environment through funding by HKBU. The collaboration fuses the creative talents of Shaw, multi award winning director and choreographer Sir Wayne McGregor CBE, (world renowned UK performance company pushing the boundaries of physical and virtual choreography), award winning visual artist and designer Ravi Deepres (BCU), Hong Kong Ballet company.
The key focus of the research and production phase of the work is to push the boundaries of what currently exists within performance driven immersive sensory visual environments, using associated technologies in ways not experienced before. Audience members will enter into a 3D 360 LED and sound environment which has the ability to tour. It will challenge our relationships with virtual and physical space and the implications this may have in evolving cinematic futures and immersive performance states. Developing a series of environments which allow the viewer to literally become part of the experience rather than a viewer. This project represents a major step forward in post cinematic experience and virtual/physical performance, offering a unique perspective on bridging the relationships of virtual physical and interactive realms by pushing the boundaries of current new technologies.
An MOU is currently being developed between HKBU and BCU to develop further immersive projects across different sectors of both Universities where synergies exist. An enterprise partnership was secured between BCU and Studio Wayne McGregor to facilitate Deepres critical role in the production, leading to future development. - Professor Ravi Deepres, 2025.
OTOE premiered at the Venice Biennale in July 2025 to critical acclaim and is currently on show with Somerset House as part of the Infinite Bodies exhibition until February 22nd 2026. It will then tour to Tai Kwun Arts Centre, Hong Kong, Kraftwerk, Berlin and Kennedy Centre for Performing Arts, USA
