    Abstract

Painted Time for Piano, Violin and Cello, was commissioned by Flow Unit 3, one of Poland’s leading new music ensembles.

Since 2006, I have been working on the series of pieces that respond to the music of Tomasz Sikorski (1939 – 88), a composer whose work I got to know whilst studying in Warsaw in the 1990s. Composer Stephen Montague speaks of how Sikorski's work 'uses minimalism to bludgeon rather than entertain' and whilst my aim is not quite so overtly provoking, I am interested in using repetition to explore tension and resolution, writing a work that explores the relationships between materials which do not conventionally belong together, referencing music and genres quite alien to one another. Repetition is used to explore those relationships form varying perspectives.

The commission was supported by RVW Trust. Performances by Flow Unit 3 in Poland in autumn 2022 (Warsaw, Radom), autumn 2023 (Birmingham, London), spring 2024 (Katowice, Bydgoszcz), and broadcast on BBC Radio 3 New Music Show. Published by Composers Edition, recording taking place in Birmingham in November 23 for future release on CD ahead of next REF.
