Abstract
Abstract: This book offers a broad understanding of how to promote, conserve and enhance the wellbeing of working people, provided by a range of experts in workplace psychology and occupational health, without arguing around definitions of what wellbeing is, or how closely wellbeing may or may not align to health. Put simply, good wellbeing is easily observable when it is present. Sadly, many workplaces may view ‘wellbeing’ as a cheap or alternative form of occupational health promotion. The perspective here is that positive wellbeing is conducive to workplace harmony and optimisation, and workplaces can do something about it. The chapters demonstrate what poor wellbeing looks like, how it manifests, what the more severe impacts may look like, and more importantly, how wellbeing can be increased and hopefully retained whilst also being part of the way work is done in organisations. The authors have used extensive research and case knowledge to support their points, while acknowledging the practical challenges facing wellbeing improvements due to inherent job characteristics and demands. All improvements in worker wellbeing are worthwhile, and even a small nudge in the right direction could have massive benefits for employers and employees alike.
