Publishing Music by Subscription as a Promotional Tool: The Case of Jeremiah Clark, Musician of Worcester and Birmingham

    Research output: Contribution to conferencePaper

    Abstract

Jeremiah Clark was a prominent musician working in the Midlands during the late eighteenth century. Throughout his career he was involved in several areas of the profession, often simultaneously: as a chorister at Worcester Cathedral, a freelance violinist and teacher, organist at Birmingham Cathedral and at Worcester Cathedral. His four published collections of music are remarkable for spanning most of his adult professional career of thirty years, and for all being published by subscription. In this paper I will discuss the motivation for Clark’s publishing and the process of gaining subscribers to fund these projects. I will examine the subscribers for his four publications as a whole to discover the networks he maintained throughout his career.
