Abstract
Drawing on its roots in punk pedagogy, the Riffs editorial team explore the genesis of the Riffs zine and our experimental writing approach as a pedagogical tool within the Higher Education classroom and beyond. This chapter considers the ways in which the journal has been used in the pedagogy of its editors and their wider research culture, in particular exploring the use of the zine form as a teaching tool from undergraduate to doctoral level. As an alternative, inclusive space, the zine form immerses students in the material culture of popular music and instigates their engagement with current issues of debate relating to academic publication and dissemination, audience access, and writing as method. We conclude with a Punk Pedagogy Manifesto inspired by the lessons learnt, our reflections on Riffs as editorial board members, and through our roles as research-active pedagogues.
