Abstract
Using examples of testimonial theatre in Chile – Mi Mundo Patria by Andrea Giadach and
Las Niñas Araña by Luis Barrales (both premiered in 2008) – this article seeks to interrogate
traditional definitions of testimonial theatre in terms of their ethical and aesthetic
implications. Key questions include: Are there common dramatic structures in testimonial
plays produced in the last decade? Is it possible to speak of a fictional testimonial
theatre? If so, are the ethical and political values of the Latin American testimonial tradition
jeopardized?
