The Love That Dare Not Speak Its Name: O Fanstasma and Erotomania

Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceedingChapter

    Abstract

The chapter aims to identify romantic and specifically sexual obsession as a recurrent theme across gay cinema. By focussing on a text that evidences the most extreme variant of this, erotomania, the chapter situates expressions of the defiled and the abject and the discourse of doomed or unrequited love as important to the construction of a gay aesthetic and sensibility. The central concern of the essay is to raise the question of why gay love is still so often positioned as an impossibility in cinema.
