    Abstract

The finite element method has been used to analyse reinforced concrete structures from zero load up to collapse. Modified Newton-Raphson method has been used as the basic solution procedure. In this paper, the performance of various accelerators are discussed and compared with each other. The numerical instabilities which have been encountered previously [1, 2 and 30when using the modified Newton-Raphson method are discussed. Techniques to avoid such instabilities are proposed and demonstrated in an example.
