Abstract
This study investigates and analyses the relationship between Transformational leadership characteristics (TL) and the application of Total Quality Management principles (TQM) in UK based manufacturing organisations. To build a strong foundation for the current research; a critical literature review on both subjects and the relationship between them was undertaken. This in return assisted in formulating the research aim, objectives and framework. While the literature is rich in exploring the two concepts: TL and TQM, there is a clear insufficiency in researching both variables together. This paper explores the relationship between the level of transformational leadership behaviour and its impact on the application of TQM principles in manufacturing organisations in the UK. To achieve the objectives, a questionnaire was employed to assess the levels of both the Transformational leadership behaviour based on the four factors (Idealised influence, Inspirational motivation, Intellectual stimulation and Individualised consideration), and the application of 11 TQM principles in manufacturing organisations in the UK. The research targeted UK based organisations that utilise TQM principles and the analysis of the data indicated that there is a positive relationship between the transformational leadership behaviour and the application of TQM principles in the selected organisations in the UK.
