Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceedingChapterpeer-review

    Abstract

This chapter sketches out some of the main issues related to linguistic variation in Scotland, including the notion of the Scots/English continuum, before moving on to discussion phonetic, phonological, lexical, and grammatical variation. The chapter also considers how the field might develop in the future and outlines a number of potentially fruitful areas of investigation, including the role of the digital humanities in facilitating public engagement with language research, the impact of outreach programmes which have Scots at their centre, and how social media is being embraced by language revitalisation campaigners.
