    Abstract

By the time Marc-Antoine Charpentier died in 1704, the 36-year-old François Couperin had already amassed a considerable portfolio of compositions, among them his two organ masses, several ensemble sonatas and numerous motets. While there is no documentary evidence that these two men ever met, they were in close proximity for much of their working lives.
