The Asian, Caribbean and African British Families processing of Negative Emotions and Its impact on Adolescent Well-Being: The Retrospective Perception of Young Adult

Student thesis: Master's Thesis

Abstract

In this study, young adults of Asian, Caribbean, and African origins share their perspectives on how their families manage negative emotions and effects of emotional socialisation on mental health of adolescents. Semi-structured interviews with 12 individuals (4 from each ethnic group), the study uncovers various family dynamics and how these affects emotional health. Essential discoveries include how stigma, cultural norms, and communication influence emotional behaviour. The study recommends including cultural and emotional recognition programs in educational schools and it underlines the significance of cultural awareness for mental health professionals. Future studies should look at stigma addressing interventions and perform longitudinal studies to determine how cultural norms and emotional socialisation affect people’s well-being over the long run.
